Trips for Kids: May 2012

Building Healthy Confident Kids Two Wheels at a Time

Dear Andrew,

What a great spring it has been and we are so thrilled for all the great opportunities that have been awarded to us so far this year.  It has been a growing season already with what we have learned and all that we are accomplishing. As mentioned last month, our Earn a Bike program reached its annual goal of serving more than 300 youth and before the Ride program was even in full swing, more than 200 kids had gotten on bicycles.  May really was our busiest month yet with both programs running simultaneously, throw in a few bike shop sale days and an amazing trip to Moab, UT.

As we settle into June, we hope to breath a sigh of relief as we focus on getting underserved youth out in our Ride program and connecting you, our community to all that we are up to.  We have lots of great volunteer opportunities in our Ride program, as well as at one of several events that all benefit Trips for Kids Denver/Boulder.
Once again, we cannot say thank you enough for the manpower, in-kind and financial support of our community.  You keep our wheels rolling and we are so very fortunate to have you.  Thank you and we hope to see you at some of our programs and events this summer!

Take a look down below there is so much to choose from.

Sincerely,

Christi Stafford

Executive Director

A letter from Denver School of Science & Technology

Why we do what we do…

This year, TFKD/B began a pilot program with DSST-Green Valley Ranch. Over the months, their teacher, Jeremy, has chronicled the experiences of the youth and the life changing experiences they all conquered.

It was a great opportunity for TFKD/B to “dig deeper” in our ride program with youth and a great opportunity to make a difference in the lives of a handful of youth.  To read Jeremy’s final post,  click here.

You can also find his other two posts on our website byclicking here.

New Friends & Family
Salvagetti in the Highlands will be home to Trips for Kids Denver/Boulder’s new offices!!

Have you ever wondered where TFKD/B holds its offices?  If you have ever been to our bike shop, you know that magic happens there, but we don’t work from there…
Well, late summer TFKD/B will have its first official administrative office at the new Salvagetti Bike Workshop on 38th and Irving. This new friendship will come with lots of great perks so stay tuned and make plans to come visit.
Watercourse Foods Day

A very special thank you to Watercourse Foods for hosting our philanthropic Monday. Memorial Day brought many new faces and returning to Watercourse, all to benefit Trips for Kids Denver/Boulder.

Volunteer Hero

Trips for Kids Denver/Boulder is only successful, thanks to the tireless work of our volunteers. Every month in 2012, we will feature a volunteer who has helped make our programs a success!

Diego Chaparro Sinn is our May Volunteer Hero!

I had the opportunity to hang out with Diego just a few weekends back on our Annual Adult Fundraising ride on the Kokopelli Trail from Fruita to Moab. Diego shared with me in our chats, how he got involved with Trips for Kids Denver/Boulder when he saw an ad in a mountain bike magazine.

Over the last few years, Diego has had the chance to volunteer on many rides with kids, has worked behind the scenes at our weekly shop nights fixing up bicycles and for the last two years was the top fundraiser for our Kokopelli Trail ride. This year, Diego was able to raise more than $700 for TFKD/B!

When asked what his favorite part of volunteering with kids has been, he says it’s the same every time. He loves watching a group of kids get out of the bus, tired and groggy, complaining about not wanting to be there. However throughout the day, they have all sorts of unique experiences that make them fall in love with biking and bond as a team. By the end of the day, the groups never want to leave. Their spirits are high and they are pumped about all they have accomplished.

Diego says he doesn’t have as much free time as he did last summer to get out with the groups as he is raising his own children, but says, “if you are thinking about volunteering, you just gotta do it. You won’t regret it.”

Thank you Diego for all you do for Trips for Kids Denver/Boulder, your support makes a difference!
