Trips for Kids Denver/Boulder Cycling Programs
Youth Mountain Biking “Ride” Program
TFKD/B partners with numerous youth agencies in the Denver and Boulder (Boys & Girls Clubs, Tennyson Center, Urban Peak, Girls Inc., I Have a Dream, Denver Family Crisis Center, and many others) to provide fun-filled, daylong mountain bike outings for small groups of children aged 10 and up. The trips are led by our experienced Ride Leaders who, along with several adult volunteers, teach the children basic mountain biking skills and provide positive encouragement throughout the challenging day on the trail. The beautiful foothills and mountain parks we explore provide the perfect setting for the youngsters to experience first-hand and learn about the natural areas of Colorado. Quotes from the kids>>

“Bike Club” Program
Over the past six years, between March and November, Trips for Kids Denver’s core youth mountain biking program has given over 2,300 underserved youngsters the opportunity to experience the joys of mountain biking and learn about the natural beauty of Colorado. In the fall of 2007, TFKD launched a new fall and winter “Bike Club” program to teach children basic bike maintenance skills and to promote safe, regular cycling in their own urban neighborhoods.
Club Members meet one day a week, after school, at a partner site to learn bicycle maintenance skills, starting with the basics – changing a flat tire – and then work up to more complex concepts, like adjusting derailleurs and over-hauling hubs. Depending on weather and other schedule considerations, the Club will participate in several “on-the-bike” sessions to learn about how to ride safely in an urban environment. And just for fun, we take the Club on one of our traditional mountain bike rides in the foothills. At the end of the eight-week session, students who meet the program requirements keep the bike they helped repair and receive a helmet, lock and starter tool kit!
2008 “Bike Club” Program Accomplishments
- Organized 39 fun and educational bicycle maintenance workshop days hosted at four youth agency partner sites
- Celebrated with nineteen graduates, each receiving a helmet, lock, pump, starter tool-kit and the refurbished bike they helped repair
2009 “Bike Club Program” Goals
- Graduate more than 40 students from the “Bike Club” program
- Become a community resource by hosting a drop-in “Bike Club” at our new Englewood headquarters facility
